Given its locations near a former strip mining pit, the Whaleback has become grounds for illegal dumping.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>&#8220;The Trail Riders thought it would be a cool thing to clean up the site for the professors,&#8221; stated David Crowl of the Anthracite Trail Riders. &#8220;We have about 40 volunteers to help out at the cleanup.&#8221; The Trial Riders designated their volunteer efforts as the &#8220;Cleanup for Professors.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The cleanup will take place on April 28th and 29th, a few days before the professors arrive. &#8220;We&#8217;d like the professors to enjoy the Whaleback without having to see all of the trash,&#8221; Crowl said.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The cleanup is part of the annual Cleanup Pennsylvania event, in conjunction with the Keep America Beautiful Great American Cleanup, and in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and Pennsylvania Waste Industries Association.<\/div>\n ","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>March 4, 2012 &#8211;\u00a0The Anthracite Trail Riders Club, a group of ATV riders and volunteers from Coal Township, is getting the Whaleback ready for a group of geology professors who will come to study the geologic formation.\u00a0The Whaleback is an anticlinal exposure of folded\u00a0rock near Shamokin.
