{"id":1807,"date":"2012-02-25T18:23:35","date_gmt":"2012-02-25T23:23:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/epcamr.org\/home\/?page_id=1807"},"modified":"2012-02-25T18:27:34","modified_gmt":"2012-02-25T23:27:34","slug":"co-gens-co-generation-technology","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/epcamr.org\/home\/content\/reference-materials\/amd-amr-and-more-alphabet-soup\/co-gens-co-generation-technology\/","title":{"rendered":"Co-Gens &#8211; Co-Generation Technology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Using Coal By-Products to Produce Energy<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Co-Generation operations collect and reprocess culm (coal waste and refuse) to extract the additional coal attached to rock and burn it to produce electricity. \u00a0Essentially, these specialized power plants can burn the coal and pass the rock through to an ash with a Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) technology. \u00a0These plants also use scrubbers to control emissions with lime. \u00a0This ash is then taken back to the strip mine and placed (usually still hot) in the pit. \u00a0This ash sets up similar to portland cement in the pit and actually seals feature from conveying water into the underground mine pool complex. \u00a0The water that does pass through the site will come in contact with the lime in the ash boosting alkalinity in the water. \u00a0Many synergistic industries and businesses often\u00a0accompany\u00a0these plants such as greenhouses, fish hatcheries and large buildings using the steam for heat. \u00a0Some plants use mine pool water as cooling water as opposed to our ever disappearing freshwater streams.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.epcamr.org\/modules\/coppermine\/albums\/userpics\/10006\/NEPCOPlant.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.epcamr.org\/modules\/coppermine\/albums\/userpics\/10006\/NEPCOPlant.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"190\" height=\"193\" \/><\/a><\/center><center><\/center>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A new kind of electricity generation power plant is changing the landscape of Pennsylvania\u2019s Anthracite and Bituminous Coalfields\u2026\u2026For the Better!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.epcamr.org\/images\/GilbertonCoGen.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.epcamr.org\/images\/GilbertonCoGenTHM.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.epcamr.org\/storage\/projects\/CoalRefuseBurningPowerPlantsEPCAMRWeb.htm\">View this PowerPoint Presentation<\/a> for a greater understanding of the process of turning coal by-products into electricity.<\/p>\n<p>EPCAMR partners with ARIPPA, a not-for-profit trade association comprising fourteen independent power producers in Pennsylvania that generate approximately 1400 megawatts of electricity by using environmentally-friendly Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) boiler technology to burn coal mining refuse.
