This anthracite coal field stretches generally from Jim Thorpe, PA (formerly known as Mauch Chunk) at the northeastern tip to Tremont, PA where the field splits in 2 directions. One “tail” veers to the west and ends at Lykens, PA. The other “tail” bears south and was sporadically mined all the way down to Dauphin, PA along the Susquehanna River. Larger towns of Tamaqua, Minersville, and the city of Pottsville are in the Southern Coal Field.
