This anthracite coal field stretches from Delano, PA on the east to Trevorton, PA on the west. Larger towns of Mahanoy City, Ashland, Mount Carmel, and the city of Shamokin are in the Western Middle Field. Centralia, PA, perhaps Pennsylvania’s most infamous coal town because of the still-burning underground mine fire, is also in this coalfield.
